College Laboratory Technician- Queens College Divisional Laboratory Animal Facility

Performs highly-skilled laboratory functions and other technical duties in support of coursework.
Sets up, maintains, and organizes student laboratories
Assists students with setting up experiments and other learning exercises, and with the use of equipment and materials
Maintains appropriate safety and hygiene standards
Maintains required documentation related to laboratory activities

College Laboratory Technician
Under the direction of the facility director or his or her designee, the College Laboratory Technician (Animal Care) is responsible for providing animal care in the College?s research laboratories for student and faculty use. The College Laboratory Technician trains and supervises students on using animals for research, and serves as a knowledge resource to the College community regarding animal care.
The College Laboratory Technician (Animal Care) performs the following duties:
Provide for the care of animals used in the research laboratories for faculty and student use.
Provide food and water, maintain clean living spaces (animal cages, racks, glassware)
Observe health condition and behavior of animals and report injuries, disease or other abnormalities to supervisor and
Veterinarian for appropriate follow-up, perform animal euthanasia if necessary.
Assess conditions and make recommendations to the Director for equipment repair or replacement.
Train and supervise students and faculty in the safe and humane handling of animals.
Provide general technical assistance as needed, including the collection of biological samples.
Maintain daily logs of animal husbandry duties.
High School Diploma with a minimum of four years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor?s degree.
Prior experience in the direct management and maintenance of large, rodent research animal colonies.
Proven ability to maintain accurate records and monitor the genetic integrity of the various animal strains currently under our care.
Some direct experience in managing personnel in a culturally diverse work environment.
Demonstrable working knowledge of laboratory animal care, diseases, and the laws governing our operation and the maintenance of our operating license.
